TNT 2010 End of year party

The weekly Talk & Tea ladies gathered at the library with invited guests, speakers and public to celebrate their holiday closing. Carol Van Der Heever was hostess and M.C.

Concerned library patron, Alex Basson spoke to the children about respecting their local and indigenous history.

Library patron, concerned mother and educator, Carol Hugo elaborated on the value of reading in transforming people and lives.

Well-known community worker Marlon Walbrugh visited with his newborn twins to recite his favourite poem to a captive audience.

He also shared some wisdom with the gathered crowd.

Ms. Van Der Heever read excerpts from honorary guest, young author Kyle Khan's book "Ms Raboto".

She commented on how the spreading story of his youthful genius has inspired other young library users especially the volunteer group called Young Librarians to also pursue creative outlets.

The event was a beautifully-catered success thanks to contributions and efforts by interested community members.

Hierdie boek is aan die Biblioteek geskenk deur een van die redaksie. Dit is van onskatbare waarde aan skoolkinders, studente en almal wat probeer om die Afrikaanse taal te leer.

This book has been donated to the library by one of the editors. It is invaluable to school children, students & all who are trying to learn the Afrikaans language.

Story hour on Friday morning, 30 April 2010, done by Godfrey Luyt, member of our Friends of Strand South Library was thoroughly enjoyed by a group of pre-schoolers from Little Einsteins who visited the library.

"Ons Word Almal Vry Gebore" (We Are All Born Free), a story on human rights with clear, bold and lovely illustrations was presented in a way that our little visitors could understand and relate to.

"Sebastiaan Se Glimlag" (Sebastian's Smile) by Catherine Rayner, a story about celebrating nature and the enjoyment of the simple things life offers, was a bonus to our visitors and an invitation for future visits.

Alternative economies & community empowerment

Useful site for empowering local communities. Tackling unemployment by allowing people to exploit their own skills & knowledge in an alternative economy (very necessary with the global economic meltdown & restructuring). Check out GivenGain.org - i saw it on a Cape Town TV programme.

Annual general meeting

Today's annual general meeting has been post-poned indefinitely due to lack of adequate community attendance.
